What is the waterline replacement process?
As the contractor’s mainline crew is installing the main water pipeline in the roadway, a second crew typically takes care of bringing the services to the residential properties. Here’s a brief description of the steps in that process:
METER PREP: Crews evaluate each meter location and peel back turf or other landscape (to be restored later) or remove hardscape (e.g., concrete, tile, pavers, etc.) directly around the meter box. This is done for two reasons: 1) because the existing meter box will be replaced, and 2) because they need to be able to access the area when they bore, or tunnel, underground to install the new copper water service pipe from the main pipeline in the street to the water meter.
PROTECTING THE AREA: Once this area is excavated and prepared for connecting the residential service, a steel plate will be placed to protect the work area and ensure that any pedestrians or bicyclists are safe. Should there be some sort of water emergency where the steel plate needs to be removed for any reason, it can be removed rather quickly, but it’s not typically an issue. The steel plate will remain in place anytime the crew is not working at that specific meter, until restoration (the last step) takes place.
RESIDENTIAL SERVICE LINE TIE-IN: Crews will then bore from the main pipeline in the street to the residential water meter and tie-in the service to connect the residence to the new water main pipeline. This will require a short outage, but a crew member will knock on the door of the residence to inform the resident of the outage to make sure that a high water use activity is not taking place (e.g., showering, washing clothes, etc.)
RESTORATION: Once all work is complete and the residence tied over to the new water service line, the area will be restored to match existing turf, landscape, or hardscape, to as close or better than pre-construction conditions.
Please note that this entire process needs to take place for every residence/meter in the Palisades community and is done sequentially, so please be patient during the process. The time period from meter prep to restoration may take up to 5-6 weeks as crews conduct one activity, move to the next residence, and so on . . . and then later return for the next step in the sequence.
