While work shifts begin at 5:00 AM, most of our employees work a four 10-hour day schedule, but not always consecutively. You’ll have weekends and evenings off to spend with family and friends, or to just relax! You don’t have to choose between work and concerts, T-ball games or that bowling league you play every Friday night! Working here will make weekend getaways a whole lot easier!

Our operators drive state-of-the-art equipment that is well maintained by our internal partners in Fleet Services. Many repairs are done in house by skilled mechanics, while some specialty repairs are sent out for service. We are continually adding technology to keep our operators safe and to assist in providing efficient service. We update our truck specifications as needed to respond to changes in the industry that allow us to remain on the cutting edge and increase safety.

Our heavy-duty collection trucks are on an 8-year replacement cycle, ensuring that vehicles are replaced on a regular basis. Our goal is to phase trucks out prior to the time maintenance costs increase and the reliability of the truck decreases. Truck performance is evaluated annually by the Fleet Division to ensure it is performing as expected and that the 8-year replacement cycle is feasible.

Being that we provide an essential service to residents and businesses, we work all holidays that fall during the work week from Monday to Friday. But holiday hours are paid on top of the hours you work on a holiday.

• 2 Floating Holidays

Gilbert employees also receive vacation and sick leave hours based on years of service.

Employees are eligible for tuition reimbursement for their continuing education. This is a great way for employees to get the education level they want without having to decide between work and school. Employees are able to do both and get their degree at their own pace. Tuition reimbursement is authorized at $5,000 per year for employees with at least six months of employment.

Medical, dental and vision are available to employees and their family. There are a few different plan options depending on your needs. Deductibles and premiums vary, depending on the level of care you select.

We are self-funded for medical and dental insurance. That means we have the ability to help manage costs for the plan. Our plan has performed so well, that we did not have a rate increase for the last several years. Although, in July 2021, rates increased on average about 3%, well below the national average of 6-7% ANNUALLY!

There are advancement opportunities for motivated employees to move within Solid Waste. We work to help prepare these individuals for advancement. We offer employee workshops on interviewing, applying for positions, and resume writing. We also have a program in place for Solid Waste employees who are interested in moving up into supervisory positions.

Employees are contributing members of the Arizona State Retirement System. This is a great way to plan for retirement starting your first day on the job. This is a mandatory program that to which all employees contribute.  Benefits to ASRS members are guaranteed by the Arizona Constitution. Employees contribute 12.41% and the employer has a matching contribution.
