Project Description

In accordance with the Desert Sky Park Master Plan which was completed in Phase 1, an additional 70 acres will be developed at Desert Sky Park located off of Power Road, south of Williams Field Road, in the Rittenhouse Basin. The design of the park serves two purposes: flood control and storm water retention, as well as park and recreation amenities. At completion, Parks and Recreation amenities will include 18 acres for high intensity uses, 115 acres for medium intensity uses, and 32 acres for low intensity uses.

Phase 1 construction included 4 multi-use fields with sports lighting, 1 restroom building with office and storage, a 3.5 acre lake for irrigation storage (sized for full build-out), ramada area, ninja warrior course and playground, and 450 parking spaces. 

The 2021 concept plan's major amenities include:

• Additional collegiate size multi-use fields
  • Including a Championship Field with integrated shade and seating
• Sensory Playground
• Plaza Areas
• Trailhead
• Additional Parking

CURRENT PHASE: PRE-DESIGN

This project is currently in the planning phase. Design is anticipated to begin in late 2024, and more details will be shared as the design phase progresses.

What is the Desert Sky Park Phase 2 Project?
It is a joint effort with the Flood Control District of Maricopa County (FCDMC) and Gilbert on an additional 70 acres in the Rittenhouse Basin off of Power Road, south of Williams Field Drive. The basin will be designed to serve two purposes: flood control and storm water retention, as well as park and recreation amenities.

When will the Park expansion be open to the public?
Phase 2 of Desert Sky Park is currently in the planning phase, implementing community feedback. Design and construction timelines will be updated on the project website to keep the community informed. 

When will the design phase begin?
Design concepts will be begin in August 2024, following the planning. Updates will be shared via the project website. Check out the current renderings. 

Will there be improvements to Power Road as well?
Yes, additional access to the Park will be added with minimal disruption at Power Road.

How will the expansion effect the operation of the current Park access and amenities?
Any impacts to access and operation will be kept to a minimum and planned well in advance for early notice.
