Chief Michael Soelberg was appointed as the Gilbert Police Department Chief of Police in June 2017. Chief Soelberg has been a Town of Gilbert resident since 1995. The Town of Gilbert continues to be one of the fastest growing towns in the nation as well as one of the safest towns in the nation. Chief Soelberg has placed an emphasis on keeping up the Department’s growth with the growth of the community.
Chief Soelberg began his law enforcement career with the Mesa Police Department in 1995. He worked numerous assignments throughout his career, some of which included Patrol, Criminal Investigations, Human Resources, Training, Public Safety Communications Center, Professional Standards, CompStat, Inspections, Policy & Planning, Peer Team, and Employee Wellness. As Assistant Chief, he led Mesa Police Department’s efforts to expand community engagement, improve employee wellness, and the development of department wide use of force de-escalation training and crisis intervention training.
Chief Soelberg graduated from Weber State University (Ogden, UT) earning Bachelor of Science degree and a Master of Education degree from Northern Arizona University (Flagstaff, AZ). In 2009, Chief Soelberg completed a six-month research fellowship with the Police Foundation, in Washington, DC. He is a graduate of the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) Leadership in Police Organization (LPO) training; the FBI National Academy, Session #258, in Quantico, VA; and the Major Cities Chiefs Association (MCCA) Police Executive Leadership Institute (PELI), Class #4.
Chief Soelberg is a member of the Federal Bureau of Investigations National Academy Associates (FBINAA); International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP); Arizona Association of Chiefs of Police (AACOP); East Valley Police Chiefs Association (EVPCA); International Association of Auto Theft Investigators (IAATI); Arizona Auto Theft Investigators Association (AATIA); East Valley NAACP; Mesa Association of Hispanic Citizens (MAHC); and the Arizona Muslim Police Advisory Board.
