Lithium-ion batteries are the most common type of rechargeable batteries on the market. They are found in cell phones, wheelchairs, power tools, e-bikes, e-scooters, electric vehicles and more.

If they become physically damaged or are not used, stored or disposed of properly, lithium-ion batteries have the potential to overheat, catch fire, and cause explosions.

Most commonly, lithium-ion battery fires are caused by:

  • Overcharging
  • Completely draining the battery
  • Exposure to excessive heat or cold
