Gilbert, Ariz. - As temperatures start to climb, Gilbert Fire & Rescue wants to remind residents and visitors of the dangers of extreme heat. Take the following precautions to avoid heat-related illnesses.
Heat Safety Tips
- Look Before You Lock
Always check the back of your car for children and pets.
- Stay Hydrated
Drink more water than usual and avoid sugary or alcoholic drinks.
- Apply Sunscreen
Sunburns impact the ability for your body to cool down.
- Stay Indoors
Remain inside with air conditioning when possible, especially during the hottest parts of the day.
- Avoid Strenuous Activities
If you have to be outside, choose morning and late evening and pace yourself.

Heat-Related Illness
Heat exhaustion and heat stroke are serious risks in extreme heat. Know what to look for and take action right away if you notice any of the signs below.
The signs of heat exhaustion include:
- Excessive sweating
- Dark urine
- Headaches
- Dizziness
- Fatigue
If you or a loved one is experiencing heat exhaustion, get to a cool place and sip water.
Heat stroke is a serious illness that can be fatal. Signs and symptoms include:
- Red, hot, dry skin
- Loss of consciousness
- Altered mental state
If you see someone experiencing signs and symptoms of heat stroke, call 911 immediately.
